With some of the most fertile and productive soil in Australia, the Southern Forest region is reknown for it's variety and quality fruit and vegetables. With so much on offer, there's always a food lovers event just around the corner! Take a look at some of the events coming within the region.
These exotic, uniquely flavoured, gourmet mushrooms grow on the roots of hazelnut and oak trees inoculated with imported truffle spores from France. They are found centimetres under the ground which means a good truffle dog can smell one from 50 metres away. Using truffle dogs saves a finger or two, most of the French Trufferies still use pigs which are quite greedy and getting the truffle off them is a mean feat!
Manjimup is the largest producing region in the Southern Hemisphere, with two of the largest Trufferies, The Manjimup Truffle Company and the Wine and Truffle Company holding a captivated audience of chefs and foodies world wide.
Every year in December Manjimup hosts the Cherry Harmony Festival to celebrate the start of the cherry season. Visitors can expect to be treated to live entertainment, cherry stalls, Southern Forests Food Avenue, wood chopping, wine tasting, a bucking bull, dunking tank, cherry pip spitting competition. Plus there's a celebration of the huge array of produce grown in the area. It's all topped off with the famous Long Table Lunch, held amongst the sweeping rows of cherries at the Newton Brothers Orchards.
